On August 6, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan of Singapore before the series of Foreign Ministers' meetings on East Asia cooperation in Manila, the Philippines.
Wang Yi said that China-Singapore relations underwent some setbacks, but recently, leaders of both countries have conducted close exchanges, which enhances mutual trust, and is of great importance to ensuring the healthy development of future bilateral relations. China appreciates Singapore for its active efforts in advancing the construction of the ASEAN community and China-ASEAN relations as the country coordinator of China-ASEAN relations. Singapore will take over the rotating presidency of the ASEAN next year. It is believed that the country will play a more constructive role in promoting the construction of the ASEAN community and the development of China-ASEAN relations. Facing the world that full of uncertainties, China and the ASEAN must make joint efforts, through well holding this series of Foreign Ministers' meetings on East Asia cooperation, further enhance trust, eliminate unnecessary doubts, focus on future mutually beneficial cooperation, enable the international community to enhance confidence in the region and maintain its positive expectation on the region, which conform to the common interests of all countries in the region.
Vivian Balakrishnan expressed that recently, Singapore and China have enjoyed frequent high-level exchanges, and witnessed smooth dialogue and cooperation in various fields and at all levels. With full confidence and expectation on Singapore-China relations, the country hopes to further consolidate and deepen bilateral relations through advancing cooperation under the "Belt and Road" framework. With joint efforts, ASEAN-China relations have achieved important and positive progress in the past year and the South China Sea situation is stabilizing. As the country coordinator of ASEAN-China relations, Singapore will continuously exert its utmost efforts to well play its due role in making this series of Foreign Ministers' meetings truly reflect the fact that the current regional situation is stabilizing and improving, so as to send out a positive signal of peace, stability, development and prosperity in the region to the world.
