|Wang Yi Meets with High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini|
On September 27, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York.
Wang Yi expressed that the Chinese side is willing to timely coordinate stance with the EU side through regular strategic communication. China and the EU are two independent and important forces in international affairs, as well as important components of world multi-polarization. We both advocate multilateralism, advocate giving play to the role of the UN, and advocate the settlement of international disputes through peaceful means. Against the background that uncertainties are on the rise in the current international relations, strengthening China-EU cooperation will add positive energy to the world. It is also our common responsibility to well maintain, consolidate and develop China-EU relations. The two sides should intensify coordination to ensure that the upcoming Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) will also utter the voice of upholding multilateralism and safeguarding international law and international rules as the current session of the UN General Assembly does.
Wang Yi said that the Chinese side appreciates the EU side for openly manifesting that the Europe-Asia connectivity strategy which was just adopted aims to seek cooperation with countries including China. The EU side expressed that it will promote the building of Eurasian connectivity with an open and inclusive attitude, which is consistent with the Chinese side's proposition to advance cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. The Chinese side welcomes the EU side to actively participate in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, and is willing to actively consider the integration between the construction of the Belt and Road and the Europe-Asia connectivity strategy, and implement the cooperation plan in a down-to-earth manner as soon as possible.
Federica Mogherini expressed that the EU and China share extensive common interests and cooperation fields. It is of great importance that both sides maintain regular communication on strategic issues of common concern. The EU side highly appreciates the Chinese side's constructive stance on the Iranian nuclear issue and other issues, and agrees that against current circumstances, both sides should enhance unity, intensify communication and coordination, and jointly maintain as well as advance multilateral process. The EU attaches importance to its cooperation with the Chinese side in promoting Eurasian connectivity. The Europe-Asia connectivity strategy adopted by the EU last week is definitely not antagonistic to the Belt and Road Initiative, but stands ready to form interaction with the Belt and Road Initiative, which will be conducive to facilitating bilateral cooperation in this field. The EU side is willing to make joint efforts with the Chinese side to well hold the ASEM.
Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern. Wang Yi reiterated the Chinese side's stance on the reform of the World Trade Organization.
