|Wang Yi Meets with Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo of the United States (US)|
On October 8, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo of the United States (US) in Beijing, during which the two sides engaged in in-depth communication on China-US relations.
Wang Yi said that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and the US. Over the past 40 years, both China and the US have undergone great changes and also reaped tremendous benefits from mutual exchanges. The most profound lesson and experience from the 40-year development of bilateral relations is that cooperation is the only right choice of China and the US, which will deliver win-win results, whereas confrontation will end up with a loss for both sides.
Wang Yi said that the current China-US relations are at a critical stage. China will continue to adhere to peaceful development, continuously deepen reform, and expand its opening up, so as to finally embark on a path of development and revitalization that would break the stereotype that once a country grows stronger, it will seek hegemony. The US side should view and understand China's development in the right light, stop its groundless accusations against China and wrong actions undermining China's core interests, and meet the Chinese side halfway to firmly grasp and stick to the correct direction of the development of bilateral relations. The Chinese side is firmly committed to developing favorable China-US relations with the US side, and will also firmly safeguard its sovereignty, security and development interests.
Wang Yi elaborated on China's principles and position on such issues as China-US trade and economic frictions, the Taiwan issue, and the South China Sea issue. Wang Yi emphasized that the trade war would never solve problems, and the Chinese side is still willing to address these issues through negotiations with the US side on the basis of equality, honesty and solemnity. China fully respects all countries' choices made of their own accord and never interferes in the internal affairs of other countries. China has a clear conscience in this respect. The Chinese side urges the US side to abide by the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three China-US Joint Communiqués, stop official exchanges and military contact with Taiwan, revoke arms sales to Taiwan, stop unreasonable intervention in countries that have established or are hoping to establish diplomatic relations with China, effectively restrain and restrict the development of the "Taiwan independence" forces, and take practical actions to safeguard China-US relations as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
Michael R. Pompeo said that the US and China are still at odds with each other on many issues, but the US does not oppose China's development. The US has no intention to block China, nor does it have any policy to completely contain China. The US and China, the world's two largest economies and most powerful countries, shoulder major responsibilities for world peace and prosperity. The two sides should strengthen communication, increase mutual trust, and step up cooperation on a rules-based foundation. The US side adheres to the one-China policy and hopes to continue to strengthen communication and cooperation with the Chinese side on major international and regional issues.
Michael R. Pompeo briefed Wang Yi on his visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and said that the US side appreciates the Chinese side's consistent position on the Korean Peninsula issue and its important efforts to promote the denuclearization, and hopes to keep up strengthening cooperation with the Chinese side. Wang Yi introduced the Chinese side's efforts to promote the realization of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. Wang Yi emphasized that the Chinese side's position is clear and consistent and will remain unchanged. The US side should pay attention to the DPRK's reasonable demands for safety and development with positive responses. The Chinese side supports the direct dialogue between the US and the DPRK and is willing to continue to play its unique and important role on the basis of mutual respect and accommodation of each other's concerns.
