On December 7, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in Beijing.

Wang Yi welcomed Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho to visit China, and said that it was our fifth meeting this year. The outgoing year of 2018 is an extraordinary year for China-DPRK relations. General Secretary Xi Jinping has reached a series of important consensus with Chairman Kim Jong Un during their three important meetings, pushing forward the relations between the two countries into a new historical stage. With the joint efforts of the two sides and other relevant parties, the situation on the Korean Peninsula has been eased with the Korean Peninsula issue being brought back to the track of political settlement, which is completely in line with the common aspiration of various parties including the DPRK.

Wang Yi pointed out that it is an unswerving policy of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government to well safeguard, consolidate, and develop China-DPRK relations. The 3rd Plenary Session of the 7th WPK Central Committee has made new strategic decisions which are completely in accordance with the fundamental and long-term interests of the DPRK and the nation. The Chinese side firmly supports the DPRK side in following a development path suited to its national conditions and making efforts to maintain stability, develop economy, and improve people's livelihood. The Chinese side is willing to work with the DPRK side to promote bilateral relations for greater development based on the important consensus reached by the top leaders of the two Parties and countries and the shared aspiration of the two peoples. The two sides should maintain high-level exchanges and enhance the strategic guidance on bilateral relations. China and the DPRK should well hold celebration activities marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations next year, inherit and carry forward the traditional friendship between China and the DPRK, strengthen exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and promote new development of relations between the two Parties and countries.

Wang Yi expressed that now the situation on the Korean Peninsula generally sustains the momentum for detente. China and the DPRK should continue to push for positive development of the Korean Peninsula situation in the direction of denuclearization. The Chinese side hopes that the DPRK side and the United States (US) side can maintain dialogue, address each other's concerns in a balanced manner and achieve the goals set in the DPRK-US joint statement. The Chinese side also supports the DPRK and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in strengthening exchanges and interactions and advancing reconciliation and cooperation.

Ri Yong Ho expressed that the DPRK-China relations of this year enter a new stage. Chairman Kim Jong Un visited China for three times, reaching a high degree of agreement with General Secretary Xi Jinping on developing sound relations between the two Parties and countries. The foreign ministries of the two sides have made positive progress in implementing the important consensus between the two countries' top leaders. As the year of 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the DPRK and China, the two sides should join hands to well host the celebration, deepen traditional friendship, and strengthen exchanges and cooperation in various fields, in a bid to elevate the DPRK-China relations to a higher level.

Ri Yong Ho said that in order to implement the major decisions of the 3rd Plenary Session of the 7th WPK Central Committee, the DPRK side is committed to actively creating a peaceful external environment. With the efforts of the DPRK side, the situation on the Korean Peninsula has been eased with substantial progress being made on the reconciliation between the DPRK and the ROK, and the leaders of the DPRK and the US held a meeting and issued a joint statement. The DPRK side has not changed its position on realizing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. It is hoped that the DPRK and the US could establish necessary mutual trust and earnestly meet each other half way. The DPRK side spoke highly of the Chinese side's positive efforts in pushing forward the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue in light of the changes in the situation on the Korean Peninsula. The DPRK side is willing to work with the Chinese side to maintain communication and coordination to jointly safeguard stability and development of the Korean Peninsula and the region.
