Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Beibut Atamkulov of Kazakhstan
2019-05-21

On May 21, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Beibut Atamkulov of Kazakhstan on the sidelines of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Bishkek.

Wang Yi expressed that China and Kazakhstan are comprehensive strategic partners. Last month, President Xi Jinping awarded the first President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev with China's second Friendship Medal and held fruitful talks during his stay in China for the second Belt and Road Forum on International Cooperation. It is believed that under the strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries, China-Kazakhstan relations will make greater development this year.

Wang Yi pointed out that Kazakhstan is where the Silk Road Economic Belt was first put forth. The important early harvest of the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative of China and Kazakhstan has a demonstration effect in Eurasia and the world at large. In the next stage, both sides should promote the in-depth integration of the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and the New Economic Policy of the "Bright Road" of the Kazakh side, make in-depth and solid progress in production capacity cooperation, deepen financial cooperation, forge multi-dimensional interconnectivity and constantly expand areas and space for bilateral cooperation.

Wang Yi noted that today's world is full of uncertainties and sees rising unilateralism and protectionism. Cold War mentality and bullying are resurging. As comprehensive strategic partners, China and Kazakhstan should further reinforce strategic coordination and cooperation, push the upcoming meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the SCO and the SCO Bishkek Summit for gathering consensus, and take concrete actions to resist protectionism and safeguard the free trade system, so as to contribute to safeguarding international fairness and justice and advancing world peace and development.

Beibut Atamkulov said that the Kazakh side spoke highly of the Friendship Medal awarded by the Chinese side to the first President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and believed that it is a vivid reflection of the profound friendship of the two countries and the high-level strategic mutual trust. The Kazakh side is willing to work with the Chinese side to well implement the consensus of the leaders of both countries, intensify high-level exchanges, propel the integration of the New Economic Policy of the "Bright Road" and the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and enrich the connotations of bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership. The Kazakh side is deeply concerned about the rising momentum of unilateralism and protectionism in the current international community, and is willing to work with the Chinese side to enhance coordination and cooperation under the multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, the SCO, and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia to safeguard the current international orders and the common interests of the two countries.
