|Wang Yi: the United Nations should become the main platform in the practice of multilateralism|
On October 22, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi answered a question about the United Nations when he met with the press with Swiss Federal Councilor and Foreign Minister Kasses.
Wang Yi said, October 24 is the United Nations Day, and Switzerland is an important venue of multilateral institutions such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. It is of special significance for us to recall the original intention of the establishment of the United Nations, not to forget its original ideals and aspirations, and to stick to peace. The United Nations is based on the painful lessons of World War II and has played an indispensable role in safeguarding world security and stability.
Unilateralism prevails in the world today, and power politics is on the rise. The authority and status of the United Nations have been challenged as never before. The United Nations Day has offered us an opportunity to review the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, abide by the basic norms of international relations, unite against unilateralism and bullying, and safeguard the status and authority of the United Nations.
Wang Yi said, the United Nations should become the main platform for the practice of multilateralism. We shall work together to meet various challenges. The United Nations should become the main channel for the peaceful settlement of hot issues and settle disputes through dialogue and consultation. The United Nations should be the main driving force for the development of human society and actively promote the implementation of the 2030 sustainable development agenda. Wang Yi said, the United Nations should keep pace with the times and constantly reform and improve. Considering that most of the people who joined the United Nations after World War II are developing countries, the United Nations should respect the positions of developing countries and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, Wang Yi said, China is the first country to sign the Charter of the United Nations. As a permanent member of the Security Council, China will do its part to fulfill its international obligations and work with other countries to safeguard the international system with the United Nations as the core, the basic norms of international relations based on the Charter of the United Nations, and the rights of the United Nations and its central role in international affairs.
