|Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi of Japan|
On November 25, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi of Japan in Tokyo.
Wang Yi said, with the political guidance of the leaders of the two countries and the joint efforts of both sides, China-Japan relations are returning to the right track and showing a positive development momentum. It is a hard-won situation and thus should be cherished by both sides. The leaders of the two countries have reached the important consensus on jointly building China-Japan relations that fit the needs of the new era. The two sides should meet each other halfway, maintain close communication, enhance mutual trust, deepen cooperation, properly handle sensitive issues including the Taiwan question and other historical issues, and transform the will of improving and developing relations into actions of all sectors of the two countries as soon as possible. It is hoped and believed that with joint efforts of both sides, the next major political and diplomatic agendas of the two countries will become a milestone for the long-term, sound and stable development of China-Japan relations.
Wang Yi pointed out, in the face of uncertainties in the international situation and the rise of unilateralism and protectionism, China and Japan, as the world's second and third largest economies, should work together to safeguard multilateralism, uphold the multilateral trading system, maintain the international system with the United Nations at its core, and reject any bullying that violate international law. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the trilateral cooperation among China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK). As a saying goes, a near friend is better than a far-dwelling kinsman and cooperation means strength. The Chinese side is willing to work with Japan and the ROK to make this year's trilateral leaders' meeting a success, so as to lift the cooperation among the three countries. China and Japan should also strengthen communication and coordination on major international and regional issues. This will not only promote the development of bilateral relations, but also inject more stability into world peace and stability.
Toshimitsu Motegi said, the steady development of Japan-China relations is indispensable for regional peace and prosperity, and is also of great positive significance in dealing with the current turbulent international situation. The Japanese side eagerly expects President Xi Jinping's state visit to Japan next spring and is ready to intensify communication with the Chinese side and will fully prepare for the visit to make it an important historical opportunity to build Japan-China relations in the new era. The Japanese side is willing to work with the Chinese side to promote economic and technological cooperation with an open attitude, so as to create a fair and just business environment for enterprises of the two countries. Both countries need to enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges in the fields of culture and education to constantly improve the feelings between the two peoples. Efforts should be made to advance mutual trust and cooperation in the field of security and properly manage and control differences and sensitive issues. The Japanese side stands ready to carry out constructive cooperation with the Chinese side on strengthening cooperation among Japan, China and the ROK.
The two sides reached the consensus on planning counterpart exchanges in 2020 between the two Foreign Ministries.
Both sides exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern such as the situation in the Asia-Pacific region and the Korean Peninsula. Wang Yi briefed on the recent status of China-US relations and expounded on the Chinese side's principled position.
