Wang Yi Meets with Ruling Party Leader and Former Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan of the Republic of Korea (ROK)

On December 4, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who was visiting the Republic of Korea (ROK), met with Lee Hae-chan, Leader of ruling Democratic Party and former Prime Minister of the ROK.

Wang Yi said, China and the ROK are close neighbors and important partners. Under the joint guidance of the two heads of state, the current bilateral relations have maintained a momentum of development. It is the shared wish of the two peoples to promote the sustained, healthy and stable development of China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership. The Chinese side is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with the ROK side, push forward the alignment of the Belt and Road Initiative with the ROK's development strategic plans, actively explore third-party cooperation, step up the second phase of negotiations on the China-ROK Free Trade Agreement, and promote the practical cooperation between the two countries to continuously achieve new results. At the same time, the two sides should treat each other with sincerity, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, properly handle the sensitive issues affecting the healthy development of China-ROK relations, and safeguard the correct direction of bilateral relations. It is hoped that political circle of the ROK will play a positive role in this regard.

Lee Hae-chan said, the government and the opposition of the ROK attach great importance to ROK-China relations, are optimistic about China's development and prospects for cooperation of the two countries, and are committed to elevating continuously bilateral relations to a higher level. As the ruling party of the ROK, the Democratic Party is willing to make greater efforts to this end.

The two sides also exchanged views on advancing the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue.
