|Wang Yi Meets with High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell|
On December 15, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell on the sidelines of the Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the Asia-Europe Meeting in Madrid.
Wang Yi congratulated Josep Borrell on taking office as the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Wang Yi said, as comprehensive strategic partners and important forces in the process of multi-polarization, China and the EU shoulder important responsibilities for world peace and development. Facing the complicated and volatile international situation, China and the EU should enhance strategic coordination and bring more positive energy to the world. In the face of the rampant unilateralism and power politics, both sides should firmly support multilateralism and provide more stability to the world. As the World Trade Organization is now challenged by protectionism, China and the EU should hold high the banner of free trade, safeguard the multilateral trading system, and bring more openness to the world.
Wang Yi stressed, China and Europe are partners rather than rivals as there is much more consensus than divergence, and more cooperation than competition. Both sides are each other's opportunity rather than threat. The Chinese side attaches great importance to developing relations with the EU. After the establishment of the new leadership of the EU institutions, the Chinese side reiterated its proactive policy towards the EU, and both sides expressed the willingness to deepen China-EU comprehensive strategic cooperation. It is not surprising that China and the EU have differences on some issues as they have different histories, cultures, and social systems. The two sides should properly address the differences through candid dialogues based on mutual respect, mutual learning and mutual tolerance. The Chinese side is ready to work with the EU side to prepare for a series of high-level exchanges and diplomatic agendas next year, which marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, so as to elevate the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level.
Josep Borrell noted, China's achievements in the past 40 years of reform and opening up are a miracle in human history. It is believed that China's development and growth momentum in the next 40 years is irreversible. China plays a vital role in international affairs and it is impossible to solve major global and regional issues such as climate change and the Iranian nuclear issue without the Chinese side's participation. Under the current international situation, the EU hopes to set ambitious goals with China, develop mutually beneficial and win-win relationships, and promote strategic cooperation in both bilateral and international dimension, which serves the common interests of both sides and the world at large. The EU side also believes that the two sides should consider and deal with the differences between the two sides with a candid attitude and from a higher perspective, and jointly build a more peaceful and prosperous world. Next year is crucial for EU-China relations. The EU is also ready to work with the Chinese side to prepare for a series of high-level exchanges and diplomatic agendas next year.
