2021-04-13

On April 13, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended and addressed the reception celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC).

Wang Yi said that with "shared river and shared future", the six countries along the Lancang-Mekong River are close and friendly neighbors, and natural cooperative partners as well. In the past five years, the LMC mechanism has brought tangible benefits to the people of all LMC countries.

We absorbed resources from all sides, established multi-level cooperation networks and created an in-depth and comprehensive cooperation pattern, thus building up the sound momentum of "many hands make light work". We focused on practical cooperation, established priority areas of connectivity, production capacity and agriculture, and strived to turn economic complementarity into mutual support in development, which brought visible development results. We insisted in benefiting the people, helped each other in the fight against COVID-19, and supported over 500 projects in such fields as education, health, women and poverty alleviation, and delivered concrete services. We undertook regional governance, joined hands to combat the challenges of floods and droughts, climate change and non-traditional security threats, and strongly maintained regional peace and stability.

Wang Yi said that at present, China is accelerating the building of a new development paradigm, and the LMC is facing new opportunities. We must forge strong partnership and seek common development. China and the LMC countries are good neighbors that cannot be moved away and good brothers that cannot be split apart. Moreover, we are good partners seeking cooperation. We need to enhance strategic mutual trust, synergize our development plans, deepen exchanges of experience in governance, and promote the building of a community with a shared future of Lancang-Mekong countries. Second, we need to increase inter-connectivity and build development engines. We need to speed up the alignment with the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, build a LMC Economic Development Belt, and facilitate deeper Belt and Road cooperation. Third, we need to pursue innovation-driven development and foster growth drivers. China is willing to share its experience in the application of new technologies and cross-border e-commerce with the LMC countries and accelerate the construction of digital infrastructure. Fourth, we need to put people's livelihood first and consolidate the foundation of development. We need to strengthen our cooperation in public health such as vaccines, focus on the projects of water resources, environmental protection and poverty alleviation, and expand cooperation in the fields of education, tourism and youth.

Wang Yi said that China will work with the LMC countries to continue to carry forward the spirit of "development first, equal consultation, pragmatism and efficiency", keep delivering progress and results daily, monthly and annually, and foster an LMC culture featuring equality, sincerity, mutual assistance and kinship, in order to promote further development of the LMC, create a new pattern of regional cooperation and build a new platform of development and prosperity.

Myanmar Ambassador to China U Myo Thant Pe whose country is the co-chair of the LMC gave a speech on behalf of the envoys of the LMC countries. He spoke highly of the results of the LMC mechanism, appreciated China's role and support in promoting the LMC, and said all LMC countries are willing to work closely with China to strengthen the LMC mechanism, deepen practical cooperation and bring more benefits to the people.

Wang Yi also met with the envoys from the five LMC countries to China, visited the exhibition of the achievements of the LMC Special Fund with them, and announced the release of the commemorative envelopes celebrating the 5th anniversary of the LMC.
